Golf in Galway

There is so much on offer in Ireland that it can be hard to know exactly where to start your golfing adventures, but might we be so bold as to suggest Galway? Situated on Ireland’s beautiful west coast, the county benefits from luscious countryside, blending in to beautiful, rugged coastlines.

Indeed, it even prompted prominent playwright Oscar Wilde to describe it as a ‘savage beauty’. Ideal, then, you could say, for those of a golfing persuasion. Some of the world’s most famous golf course architects seemed to agree as evidenced by the fact that there are over 20 terrific tracts here for you to tackle. Even more appealingly, they are all situated within close proximity of Galway City, which, according to the most recent Census results, is the largest growing city in Europe.

Galway Bay Golf & Country Club, designed by ex-Ryder Cup player Christy O’Connor Jr, is one of the most popular courses in the region. Bordering the Atlantic on three sides, many of its greens are exposed to the elements, yet, curiously, it still plays as a parkland course. It’s certainly unique and most definitely worth a try.

Likewise, the Galway Golf Club near Salthill is another terrific golfing tract. It was designed by Dr Alister Mackenzie and is largely characterised by tree-lined fairways – well, would you really expect anything less from the man who designed Augusta National?

Then there’s Bearna Golf Club, one of the newer clubs in the region. It is home to a course which has blossomed quite spectacularly since it opened in 1996. It offers exceptional views across Galway Bay and towards the Aran Islands.
Nearby, Connemara sits right on the edge of the west coast and it is renowned for its wildly-shaped bays and inlets. This luscious links designed by Eddie Hackett, is a fierce test of golf for every level of player.

Ballinasloe, meantime, is one of Connaught's oldest and most treasured golf clubs. It was founded in 1894 and has blossomed through time to become a mature and testing parkland course which is playable all year round
Other courses of note in the region include Ardnacong, Athenry, Loughrea, Oughterard and Portumna.

So, with so many courses to pick from – not to mention the seal of approval for the region from one of the most prominent literary figures of all time – isn’t it about time you paid Galway a visit?
